Product Description

Spirulina is a microscopic multicellular cyanobacteria (blue-green bacteria or blue-green algae), which is found naturally in lakes and rivers across Africa, Asia and South America. It is a very simple ancient life form that produces its energy from sunlight through photosynthesis using the blue pigment phycocyanin, and as such is sometimes called “blue green algae”. However, spirulina is not really an algae or plant – but something in between, which was first developed about 3.6 billion years ago.

Cyanobacteria like spirulina can survive in extreme conditions that other microorganisms can not tolerate – alkaline pH value of 11 and temperatures up to 45°C.

They also belong to the photoautotrophic bacteria group – they use carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and sunlight for energy, and for these reasons it is believed that it is one of the first organisms that have settled on earth. It is also believed to have contributed to the change of atmosphere from carbon dioxide into oxygen, allowing other life forms to develop.

Since spirulina has such a high tolerance to salt and develops in waters which are strongly alkaline, it usually grows in a monoculture in which most microorganisms can not survive, while it loves such an environment. This means that organically grown spirulina does not require the use of any chemical pesticides to protect it, because its conditions for growth are a naturally hostile environment for other organisms.
Our spirulina is grown on a peninsula in the South China Sea. This location is ideal for the cultivation of spirulina because it offers consistently warm temperatures and long sunny hours that are necessary for productive growth rates. The farm is surrounded by untouched natural forests and is completely isolated from urban and agricultural sources of pollution. Our spirulina is routinely tested for the presence of mercury, lead and other pollutants, for the assurance that the final product is completely clean and does not pose a risk of heavy metal poisoning.
In addition, ponds are sampled on a daily level and tested for pH value and optical density reading, which measures the concentration of spirulina in the water and tells us when it is ready for gathering. It takes about 2 months of uninterrupted growth before it can be harvested for the first time, but after that it grows so fast that it can be harvested every week.
Spirulina is removed from the water using a fine net that captures small fibers. The collected spirulina is then sieved, and moved to the wash tank, where it is cleaned by hand over a sieve to ensure that only pure spirulina goes to further processing. Wet spirulina is placed in a drying chamber that quickly removes moisture via evaporation, while keeping the nutrient content, leaving a fine green powder that can be readily packaged, or pressed into spirulina tablets.

Health benefits
Unlike plants that grow on the earth, spirulina doesn’t have a heavy cellulose cell wall, so it is easy to digest.
It has a high protein content, about 65%, and contains all 9 essential amino acids (which the human body can not produce so they must be entered through diet). Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins that are vital for the production of muscles and all enzymes.

Spirulina is also rich in calcium, magnesium and iron.

•Calcium plays a role in many functions in the body, including the contribution to normal muscle function, transmission of information through the nervous system, as well as maintaining healthy bones and teeth.
•Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, normal muscle function, metabolism, and reduces exhaustion and fatigue.
•Iron contributes to normal oxygen transport in the body; it also contributes to normal cognitive function, normal immune system function, and reduce exhaustion and fatigue.
Spirulina contains large amounts of beta carotene (vitamin A) – a powerful antioxidant which it has 25 times more than carrots. It contains all the B group vitamins, especially rich in vitamin B-12, vitamin B-1, B-2 (riboflavin), B-3 (niacin), B-5, B-6, B-7 (biotin), B -9 (folic acid) and vitamins C and K.
– Spirulina contains essential Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, including GLA (gamma linolenic acid), which in this form is only found in breast milk.
– It also has chlorophyll in abundance, which is an excellent antioxidant and is called “green blood” because of the similar composition of hemoglobin in the blood.

Usage: organic spirulina powder can be mixed in a glass of water, juice, yogurt or with fresh fruits in a nutritious smoothie. The powder can be sprinkled over salads and soups, adding a powerful dose of protein, vitamins and minerals in your daily diet.
The recommended daily intake of 1 to 3 teaspoons (3-10g).
Spirulina can be used by children, pregnant women and lactating women.
