Product Description

Psyllium or the Indian plantain is a plant that grows mainly in northwestern India and is cultivated in some countries of Europe. Warm and dry conditions with occasional rainy seasons suit this one-year plant.
Its Indian name isapghula comes from the Persian words asp and gul which mean “horse ear” and refers to the shape of the small, pink psyllium seeds. Psyllium grows to a height of 30-40 cm, has a hairy stem, and an inflorescence that consists of white, star-like flowers. When the plant reaches maturity (approximately 120 days after sowing), the flower changes color to red-brown, while the upper leaves get a golden hue. One plant can produce up to 15,000 seeds that are located within the small capsules. The seeds have a protective layer (husk) which contains soluble fibers. When in contact with water, the flakes release fibers in the form of mucilage, and have the ability to increase its volume up to 15 times.
Because of this psyllium is considered a natural and harmless laxative, used for cleaning the digestive tract and removing toxins.
Making bread and pastries: Psyllium husks can be milled, for instance in a coffee mill, to obtain powder. In this form it is used as a supplement for gluten free flours. Dough with gluten free flour and psyllium becomes more like “real” dough, as the mass remains compact and the pastries do not crumble. For pastries like this it is unnecessary to add flour containing gluten. Thus, dough similar to real dough can be obtained without starch, sugar and gluten. Husks actually collect water from their environment and from the “unconnected mass” create a sticky, compact and gelatinous mass.

Usage of psyllium husks for detoxification: Recommended daily intake is 1 tablespoon (5g), which is dissolved in a glass of water, tea or juice. A thus prepared drink should be consumed as soon as possible, since the psyllium will swell, and this process should take place in the stomach. The recommended amount of drinks is 1-2 cups a day. Afterwards, it is necessary to drink an additionally glass of water, and to have a higher intake of fluids (6-8 glasses) in order to achieve a better effect. This type of detoxification is not recommended for children, pregnant women and lactating women.
